Our world is filled with signs and voices competing for our attention. Culture, friends, family, social media, and our own desires can all tell us what to do and what not to do. If we try to follow every sign, we can quickly become confused, conflicted, and anxious. The signs we choose to listen to and follow will shape who we become. The important question is not simply, “Can you read the signs?” but “What signs are you following?”

Jesus knew His disciples would need guidance after He returned to heaven, so He promised to send the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit would be their Advocate, leading them into truth and never abandoning them. The same Spirit lives in every Christ follower today. God desires to guide us through the whispers, promptings, and vibrations of His Spirit, not just when we are facing a crisis or a major decision, but in the ordinary moments of every day.

Being led by the Holy Spirit is more than having God act as our personal GPS. He wants us to love Him more than we love the answers He provides. Like Paul, we may not always know what lies ahead, and following God’s direction may sometimes lead us toward difficulty rather than comfort. But we can trust that God sees what we cannot see and is always working, even when His plan does not make sense to us.

Learning to recognize the Holy Spirit requires slowing down and reducing the noise around us. Scripture is our foundation because the Holy Spirit will never lead us in a way that contradicts God’s Word. We can also seek the wisdom of mature Christ followers and pay attention to the circumstances around us. But even these things require discernment because people interpret God’s leading through their own perspectives. When things seem unclear or contradictory, slow down, seek God, and listen. As we mature, the Spirit’s voice becomes more familiar, and we become better at recognizing His direction.

God wants more than an occasional relationship where we check in only when we need something. He desires to walk with us moment by moment, guiding us through His Spirit. The longer we listen, the better we become at recognizing His voice. The question is simple: Are you open to the leading of the Holy Spirit—not just in the difficult moments, but every moment of every day?

Verses— “And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you. No, I will not abandon you as orphans—I will come to you.” (Jn 14:16-18) For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. (Ro 8:14) God has shown these things to us through His Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit Who looks into all things, even the secrets of God, and shows them to us. (1 Co 2:10)

Questions— What are some of the voices or “signs” that compete for your attention and influence your decisions? How can you tell which ones are worth following? Would it be easier to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit if God were asking you to do a BIG thing? Why? or why not? When have you sensed the Holy Spirit leading you in a particular direction? What helped you recognize that prompting? Why do you think we sometimes assume that God’s leading will result in comfort, safety, or an easy path? 

Prayer – Gracious God, make me sensitive to the leading of you Holy Spirit. May I follow your direction in the small things and the difficult things. Thank you for the peace of knowing that you are always with me. Give me a day by day, moment by moment relationship with you sensing your guidance and presence. I am awed that the Creator of the Universe desires to live in me. Thank you! In Jesus Name I pray, amen.
