PAPER TIGERS • Tiger Tales – 7/5/26
“I’ve Got a Tiger by the Tail” is something we can all identify with. We’ve all faced problems, challenges, struggles, or crises that seem to have a grip on us. They consume our thoughts, drain our energy, and fill us with fear. But what if, with God, those tigers are really paper tigers—appearing powerful but ultimately powerless?
In Psalm 27, David faces overwhelming odds, uncertainty, enemies, and circumstances that would naturally produce worry, stress, fear, and anxiety. Like many of us, he feels surrounded. Financial pressures, work challenges, relationship struggles, health concerns, and countless daily frustrations can make us feel trapped and overwhelmed. Yet David declares, “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?”
David’s strategy for defeating these paper tigers is found in one thing: dwelling, gazing, and seeking. To dwell is to live in God’s presence rather than dwelling on fear. To gaze is to fix our attention on God instead of our problems. To seek is to pursue God’s will above our own. When God becomes our primary focus, anxiety loses its grip and fear begins to fade.
Like a bowler who must eventually release the ball, or a trapeze artist who must let go and trust the catcher, there comes a point when we must surrender control. Worry, stress, and fear do not change outcomes. God calls us to trust the One who is truly in control, seek Him first, and wait on Him with confidence.
David closes with two powerful truths: God is good, and God is faithful. No matter what we face, we can remain confident that we will see the goodness of the Lord. And when the tigers seem to surround us, we are called to be strong, take heart, and wait for the Lord. He is our light, our salvation, and our stronghold—so whom shall we fear?
Scriptures— Psalm 27:1-3 (NIV); John 14:27 (NIV); Psalm 27:4 (NIV); Hebrews 11:6 (NIV); Matthew 6:33 (NIV); Psalm 27:13-14 (NIV)
Verses— The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid? (Ps 27:1) One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple. (Ps 27:4) Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. (Ps 27:14)
Questions— What “paper tiger” are you currently facing, and why does it feel so powerful or intimidating?
David says his confidence came from dwelling in God’s presence, gazing on God’s beauty, and seeking God’s will. Which of these three do you find most difficult, and why? How does focusing on a problem, outcome, or fear tend to increase anxiety? What practical steps can help shift your focus back to God? Trusting God is like a trapeze artist letting go and waiting for the catcher. What is something you need to release into God’s hands instead of trying to control yourself? Psalm 27 ends with the challenge to “wait for the Lord.” What does waiting on God look like in real life, and how can we remain confident while we wait?
Prayer— Heavenly Father, when anxiety, worry, and fear surround me, help me remember that You are my light, my salvation, and my stronghold. Teach me to trust You, seek You first, and let go of what I cannot control. Fill my heart with Your peace and with confidence as I wait on You, knowing that You are faithful and good. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
