ALL ABOARD THE SOUL TRAIN • Love Train – 10/13/24

Unity is sadly lacking in our society and in our world. In Psalm 133 David expresses the importance of unity among God’s people, it is powerful, life changing. Unity has its own atmosphere, its own vibe. Have you ever walked into a situation, and you immediately knew that something was way out of sync? A discerning person can sense unity, they can feel it, and the lack of it causes discomfort, even anxiety, and a desire to “get out.” The importance of unity in the church cannot be underestimated. It is of paramount importance.

In worship we experience unity. We feel it at concerts, at sporting events among the fans, and often when we gather with others who share some passion, hobby, or belief. However, our deepest sense of unity comes from our personal relationships, from those with whom we share our inner thoughts, desires, and failures. Those we allow to truly see us. Christ-followers need the connection that happens in small settings, the unity that builds in spending time and sharing with others who love God and are striving to grow in their faith.

Acts 2 says the church met in large groups, but also in smaller groups. They ate together, spent time together in their homes, in small groups. In a small group of trusted fellow believers, you can experience personal affirmation and encouragement. When you share with those you trust about a concern or struggle, they can pray for you, offer words of encouragement, support you along the way. Spiritual friends also help you to apply God’s word to your life. In studying and talking about Scripture, God’s plan, you learn from others, and they learn from you. You can research questions and find answers to things that confound you. A small group is also a place where you can confess your sins. There is a burden lifted when you have friends you can share your worst with and know that they will love you anyway and help you walk through the situation. Accountability is found in small groups. When you give someone permission to ask you the tough questions and call you into account for your words and actions, you receive help and support on your Christian walk. A small group is also there when you have tough decisions to make. They know you, love you, and want the best for you, and they are going to give you wise and Godly advice. You can’t undervalue the benefits of community with a small group of believers.

If you don’t have a band of brothers and sisters upon whom you can depend, you need to get one! No one can do this for you. You must take some risks; shake someone’s hand, initiate conversation, invite some people over or out for dinner. If it’s a bust, don’t give up. You will find the right niche if you work at it. Don’t get discouraged; ask God for guidance. The value of being part of a connected group of Christ-followers is well-worth the effort. If you aren’t currently serving in a ministry, that’s a good start for meeting some people.

Scriptures:  Psalm 133:1-3 (NIV); Ephesians 4:3 (NIV); James 5:16 (NIV); Proverbs 11:14 (NKJV)

Verses: How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down on the collar of his robe. It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the Lord bestows his blessing, even life forevermore. (Ps 133:1-3)

Questions: Do you have a group of Christian friends that you can be “real” with? If so, how did these relationships get started? If not, what efforts have you made to connect? Discuss the importance of unity in the home, workplace, church, and with friends and family. How have you seen disunity cause destruction? How can we have different views of Scripture, politics, or social issues and still have unity?

Prayer: Lord, help me to be an instrument of peace and unity in my community, my church, my family, and my workplace. Help me to be forgiving, loving, and encouraging. Make my life shine so that others see You and want to be part of Your family. In Jesus Name I pray, amen.
