THE MIX • Mixed Communication – 6/7/26
We have been talking about what it means to get the mix right as followers of Jesus Christ. We’ve looked at living out the Golden Rule and the power of love. Today we’re adding acceptance to the mix, because acceptance is one of the clearest ways we show love. In Romans 15, Paul pleaded with believers who were divided and critical of one another, reminding them that Christ accepted them, so they should accept one another. Acceptance means more than tolerance—it means welcoming people, drawing them close, and making them feel valued, loved, and included.
Jesus modeled this everywhere He went. He welcomed the outcast, the sinner, the powerful, the broken, the young, and the old. He saw people who needed a healing touch, a listening ear, or a loving word, and He pulled them in when others pushed them away. God knows how deeply people need acceptance, and as followers of Christ, we have a responsibility to be loving, welcoming, and accepting of every person who crosses our path. There are no exceptions.
God also calls us to welcome people who are different from us. We may not agree on every theological, political, cultural, or personal issue, but we are called to accept one another even when we disagree. Throughout my life and ministry, I’ve learned and grown because I listened to people with different perspectives. Jesus is bigger than our differences. When someone is hurting, struggling, or questioning their value, our response should be to listen, love, and remind them that they matter.
Welcoming others changes us. It grows our empathy, expands our understanding, and helps us see people through God’s eyes. Sometimes acceptance is as simple as making eye contact, offering a smile, saying hello, or starting a conversation. Small acts of kindness can lift a discouraged spirit and remind someone they are not alone. Imagine the difference it would make if we carried a welcome mat wherever we went—at work, school, the store, the gym, or in our neighborhoods.
The heart of God has always been to draw people in. Scripture gives us a picture of heaven filled with people from every nation, tribe, language, and background worshiping together. Jesus Himself knew what it felt like to face closed doors, yet He still stands at the door and knocks, inviting us into a relationship with Him. When we experience His grace and acceptance, it becomes natural to extend that same welcome to others. So, ask God to show you one person you can draw closer, encourage, and welcome. We won’t do it perfectly, but let’s do everything we can to get this right.
Scriptures— Romans 15:5-7 (NCV); Matthew 25:35 (NRSV); Hebrews 13:2 (CSB); Luke 15:1-2 (NIV); Revelation 7:9 (NIV); Revelation 3:20 (NRSV)
Verses— May the patience and encouragement that come from God allow you to live in harmony with each other the way Christ Jesus wants. Then you will all be joined together, and you will give glory to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Christ accepted you, so you should accept each other, which will bring glory to God. (Ro 15:5-7)
Questions— If people judged your level of acceptance by your facial expressions, body language, and daily interactions, what message would they receive? What are some practical ways you can communicate to others, “You matter, you are valued, and you are welcome”? Is there an area of your life where God is knocking, inviting you to trust Him more fully, and what would it look like to open that door?
Prayer— Thank You for welcoming me through Your grace and love. Help me to welcome others in the same way. Give me eyes to see those who are hurting, courage to reach out, and a heart that reflects Your kindness and acceptance. Use me to share Your love. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
