PAPER TIGERS • They’re Great – 8/2/26

A paper tiger is something that appears powerful and intimidating, but in reality is weak and ineffective. When it comes to changing something in our life, we often focus on barriers and obstacles, and soon we start seeing tigers everywhere. We live in a culture that wants instant results—fast food, same-day delivery, instant communication, instant success. Advertisers promise quick fixes and easy solutions, but real change doesn’t happen overnight. Change is difficult, it is slow, it requires time and space, and it is a process. The good news is that with God, the obstacles that seem overwhelming are often nothing more than paper tigers.

Change usually begins with concern. Something doesn’t feel right. You may be troubled by a habit, a relationship, a dream that is fading, or simply a sense that life is out of balance. That discomfort is often God’s way of preparing you for something new. Some people spend years ignoring that feeling until the opportunity for change fades away. Sometimes God allows a crisis in order to get your attention Something happens that moves the issue off the back burner and forces you to deal with what you have been avoiding. God can use even painful circumstances to bring about transformation and lead you toward something better.

Eventually you arrive at a turning point where a choice must be made. Will you move forward or retreat? Will you deny the problem or deal with it? Change always involves uncertainty, and that uncertainty can awaken fear. You begin imagining ferocious tigers behind every door. The truth is that change often feels worse before it feels better. The first steps can be uncomfortable, awkward, and painful because you are entering unfamiliar territory. Yet if you are going to experience lasting change, you must keep moving forward and not allow fear to stop you.

The key to defeating paper tigers is a renewed mind. God transforms us by changing the way we think. Lasting change is not simply modifying behavior; it is learning to see life from God’s perspective. His truth exposes the lies we tell ourselves and gives us hope that change is possible. But knowing the truth is not enough. Faith requires action. Repentance means responding to what God reveals and putting truth into practice. New habits and new behaviors may feel strange at first, but growth happens when you continue doing what is right even when it feels difficult.

That is why commitment is essential. Change is not a one-time event but a lifelong process of becoming more like Christ. There is no point on this side of heaven where we arrive and have nothing left to learn. God continually stretches us, teaches us, and calls us to higher levels of growth. Along the way you will be tempted to quit, but God is with you in every stage of the journey. Seek Him in the middle of the struggle, listen to His guidance, stand on His truth, and trust His power. The tigers may look fierce, but with God you will discover they are only paper tigers. You can change, you can break through, and if you do not give up, God promises a harvest of blessing.

Scriptures— Job 30:27 (NLT); 2 Corinthians 7:10 (NCV); Job 34:3-4 (TLB); Romans 12:2 (NRSVA); John 8:32 (NIV); James 2:17 (NIV); Ephesians 4:23 (TLB); Psalm 37:5 (TLB); Galatians 6:9 (TLB)

Verses— My heart is troubled and restless. (Jb 30:27); We can choose the sounds we want to listen to; we can choose the taste we want in food, and we should choose to follow what is right. (Jb 34:3-4)

Questions— Why do people resist change even when they know it is necessary? Discuss a time when God has stirred up the nest in your life. How did you respond? In what area of your life may God be calling you to take a step of faith and begin acting on what you already know?

Prayer— Heavenly Father, thank You for walking with me through every season of change. Help me to trust You when obstacles seem overwhelming, renew my mind with Your truth, and give me the courage to take the next step of faith. Remind me that with You, the tigers I fear are only paper tigers. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
