JELLY AND JAM •  Amen – 1/11/26

Life has a way of putting us in a jam. Hurt, pain, brokenness, and disappointment pile up until it feels overwhelming. Yet Scripture and experience remind us that victory is possible—not by sheer willpower, but by the hope, peace, love, grace, and power of God. When we finally whisper, “Somebody say a prayer for me,” we are often closer to freedom than we realize.

Many of us are carrying far more baggage than we were meant to handle. We push it, manage it, excuse it, and try to make it fit into our lives, but it keeps weighing us down. We hide it behind smiles and polite answers, convincing ourselves—and others—that everything is fine. Deep down, though, we know it isn’t working. God gently invites us to admit the struggle, unpack the baggage, and deal with it so we can become who He created and called us to be.

The first step is often the hardest: admitting we are powerless to change the problem on our own. Our instinct is to control—our image, our pain, our past, and even other people. That desire to “play God” has been part of the human story since the beginning. Control may look strong, but it always leads to fear, frustration, and exhaustion. Freedom begins when we stop pretending and start surrendering.

God already knows what we are facing. He sees every tear, every sleepless night, every quiet battle no one else notices. Nothing is hidden from Him, and even more comforting—He is not distant or disappointed. He is compassionate, loving, and ready to heal. Like a perfect Father, He invites us to lay our baggage on the counter and let Him handle what we never could.

Change is possible because there is no power shortage with God. The same power that raised Christ from the dead is at work in us, giving both the desire and the ability to change. We were never designed to do this alone. When we admit our need and place our trust in Him, God meets us with mercy, strength, and new life. Sometimes all it takes is an honest prayer and a surrendered heart to begin again. “Amen.”

Scriptures – Isaiah 57:18-19 (GNT); Romans 7:21-23 (NIV); Proverbs 28:13 (GNT); Philippians 3:13 (NIV); James 4:6 (NRSV); Psalm 56:8 (TLB); Ephesians 1:19-20 (TLB); Philippians 2:13 (ERV)

Verse – “I have seen how they acted, but I will heal them. I will lead them and help them, and I will comfort them, and I will comfort those who mourn. I offer peace to all, both near and far! I will heal my people.” (Is 57:18-19)

Discussion – How do you usually respond when you feel overwhelmed? What “baggage” is easiest for you to hide or try to manage rather than bringing it to God? How does our desire for control keep us from experiencing freedom? How does knowing that God sees every tear and is still compassionate toward you change the way you approach your struggles? What is one practical step you can take this week to surrender an area of your life to God and trust His power to bring change?

Prayer – God, I come to You honest and tired, carrying more than I was ever meant to hold. I admit I can’t fix everything on my own and I need Your mercy and strength. Help me to lay down my baggage, trust Your power, and receive Your healing. Give me the will and the courage to surrender and lead me into the freedom only You can give. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
