Animal Planet • Fly Away – 8/31/25

All of creation reflects God’s greatness and creativity. The life cycle of a butterfly is intricately planned and amazing. The butterfly’s process to maturity aligns well with the way God works in our lives bringing about transformation and new life when we fully surrender to His plan. The caterpillar crawls around eating and shedding its skin. Five times it repeats this before it becomes a chrysalis and begins to transform. Initially the process isn’t pleasant. The caterpillar fights against what is taking place, the change, the transformation process. However, when the work of nature is complete, it emerges in a new form that looks nothing like the old. The butterfly shakes its wings and learns that it can fly. What was once bound to the ground can now soar. Instinctively the butterfly migrates thousands of miles, flying thousands of feet in the air, pollinating as it goes to its destination in Mexico. The butterfly has gone through the process of metamorphosis.

The Bible calls the process of becoming who God designed us to be sanctification. That simply means to be made holy—set apart for something special. Through Jesus, we become “new creations,” leaving behind our old ways and learning to live differently. Like a caterpillar that goes through metamorphosis to become a butterfly, Christians are called to be transformed from the inside out.

This transformation has stages. First, we must run from the desires and habits that keep us stuck in our old way of life. Next, we must turn toward God, choosing what is right and good. The devil will try to drag us back into our old patterns, but with the power of God’s Holy Spirit at work within us, we can move forward and leave behind the old life. As we grow, we learn to trust God fully—complete surrender. Only then can God’s love reshape us. Finally, we progress and learn to live with purpose sharing our story and spreading God’s grace to others. Each step moves us closer to the kind of life God designed, one that is full, purposeful, and free.

Too often, people who follow Jesus know they have “wings” but still live like caterpillars, crawling through old patterns and struggles. Don’t settle for less; you were created for more. God wants you to soar, to live out your new identity in Christ, and to spread His love wherever you go. Why crawl when you were made to fly?

Scriptures – 2 Timothy 2:21 (NCV); 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NIV); Romans 5:17 (NRSV); 2 Timothy 2:22 (NIV); 1 John 3:2

Verse – All who make themselves clean from evil will be used for special purposes. They will be made holy, useful to the Master, ready to do any good work. (2 Ti 2:21) Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Ro 12:2)

Discussion – Share an animal fact that amazes you. Where are you in the spiritual metamorphosis process? Explain what sanctification means in your life? Is sanctification painful? Are you using your wings? Why do many Christians never fly? Why do Christians who has flown stop flying?

Prayer – Dear Lord, strengthen my faith and make me more like Christ. Sanctify me, change me, keep me moving toward You by the power of Your Holy Spirit who lives in me. Let my life be a witness to Your love and truth. Use me for Your glory and accomplish Your purpose in me. In Jesus’ Name I pray, Amen.
