Animal Planet • Fish – 9/14/25

We’re continuing our Animal Planet series, and today we’re going fishing—but not just for fish. We’re talking about temptation, something every one of us struggles with. The book of James has a lot to say about temptation. Let’s be honest—have you ever ever been tempted to skip church, to lie, to do something you knew was wrong? The truth is, all of us have. Your temptation may not be the same as the person next to you, but no matter how mature you are in your faith, temptation will always be an issue. James says clearly—don’t blame God. God tests to make us stronger, but He never tempts. Temptation comes from Satan, who has been running the same old game since the beginning of time. And he’s good at it. Just look at the brokenness in our world—genocide, sex trafficking, violence, corruption. Make no mistake—evil is real. Satan is luring, enticing, casting his lines every day.

Temptation works just like fishing. Fishermen use the right lure for the right fish, and Satan does the same. He customizes the bait to fit our desires. James 1:14 says, “One is tempted by one’s own desire, being lured and enticed by it.” That desire itself isn’t wrong—God created us with desires—but Satan twists them in God-forbidden ways. Like a fish striking a baitfish, we don’t see the hook hiding inside. At first sin seems small, manageable, even harmless, but James warns that desire gives birth to sin, and sin—when full-grown—brings death. When our sin catches up with us, just like a fish that’s been caught, we thrash and struggle hurting ourselves and the people around us. And then Satan whispers the lie that it’s unforgivable, that God could never use us again. But that’s not true—God always provides a way out. Every good and perfect gift comes from Him, not from the bait Satan dangles in front of us.

So how do we resist? James offers help: First, remember God’s greatness. If you’ve got God, you’ve already got all you need—why take the bait? Let the lures swim by. Second, remember your new birth. Without being born again, you’ll never have the strength to face temptation, but in Christ you have the Spirit’s power to overcome. Third, remember the seasons. Some temptations flare up for a time, but if you cling to God’s promises, they will pass and you’ll come out stronger. James 1:12 says, “Blessed is anyone who endures temptation, for they will receive the crown of life.” And if you’ve already messed up—hook, line, and sinker—don’t believe the lie that it’s over. In Christ, Satan is forced to catch and release. You can get back on track, grow, and swim toward God. The next time you see a lure, don’t bite. Just keep swimming—toward God.

Scriptures – James 1:13 (NRSVUE); 1 Corinthians 10:13 (CEB); Psalm 139:15 (NIV); James 1:14 (NRSVUE), 1:15 (ESV), 1:16-17 (NIV); 1:18 (NLT); 1:12 (NCV)

Verses – No temptation has seized you that isn’t common for people. But God is faithful. He won’t allow you to be tempted beyond your abilities. Instead, with the temptation, God will also supply a way out so that you will be able to endure it. (1 Co 10:13)

Discussion  How does knowing that God doesn’t tempt you change the way you think about the temptations you face? What kind of “lures” does Satan use most effectively in your life? Why do you think small compromises can be so dangerous over time? What are some practical ways you’ve seen God provide a “way out” when you’ve been tempted? As a Christ-follower how does the fact that Satan must “catch and release” encourage you when you have given in to temptation?

Prayer – Lord, thank you that every good and perfect gift comes from You, and that You never tempt me but always give me strength to endure. Help me to recognize the lures of temptation and choose Your way instead of taking the bait. Remind me of the new life I have in Christ and the power of Your Spirit living in me. When I stumble, lift me up with Your grace and keep me moving toward You. In Jesus’ Name I pray, amen.
