Paper Tigers• Taming the Tigers – 07/12/26

Life will bring challenges, but every challenge is not a sign of defeat. Some of the greatest battles we face are “paper tigers”—situations that appear powerful, intimidating, and overwhelming, but have no authority over the child of God who stands in faith. The enemy often magnifies problems to make us focus on fear instead of faith. Yet God’s Word reminds us that trials can produce endurance, maturity, and spiritual strength.

Jesus said, “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33 KJV). Our victory is not based on the absence of problems; it is based on the presence and power of God. When fear says, “You cannot overcome,” faith declares, “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13). We must learn to see our circumstances through the lens of God’s promises rather than through the limitations of our circumstances.

The key to defeating paper tigers is remembering who we are in Christ and trusting the One who holds our future. The enemy may bring pressure, but God brings purpose. The enemy may bring a battle, but God provides victory. Romans 8:37 (KJV) declares, “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.”

Like Joseph, who experienced betrayal, hardship, and imprisonment but later declared, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good…” (Genesis 50:20 KJV), we can trust that God is working even in difficult seasons. Trials are not designed to destroy us; they are opportunities for God to refine our faith and reveal His power in our lives. Like the silversmith who knows the silver is purified when he sees hisreflection in it, God uses seasons of testing to develop Christ’s character within us. The next time a paper tiger appears, remember: your problem is temporary, but God’s promises are eternal.

Scriptures: James 1:12, John 16:33, 1 Peter 5:8-9, Colossians 2:15, Romans 8:37, Joel 2:25, Genesis 6:13-14,22, Genesis 50:20.

Verses: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Phil. 4:13), “For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.” (2 Cor. 4:17-18), “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.” (Rom. 8:37), “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” (2 Cor. 5:7)

Questions: What “paper tiger” or intimidating situation am I currently facing that may look bigger than it really is? Am I allowing fear to influence my thoughts more than God’s promises? Which Scripture from this devotional speaks most strongly to my current situation, and how can I apply it this week? What would change in my attitude, words, and actions if I truly believed that I am “more than a conqueror through Christ”?

PrayerFather God, thank you for having good plans for my life. Help me to remember that even in the hard times you are there and you are teaching me to be more like you. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
