DOUBT • Reasonable Doubt – 4/12/26
As we continue with the complex topic of “Doubt”, we must address the perceived tension between science and God. There are a lot of people who want to follow Jesus, yet they struggle with doubt because they read an article or a post, watch a video, or sit in a classroom where faith is challenged, and suddenly questions begin to form. What seems like a contradiction between science and faith starts to erode confidence. The real issue isn’t that you have doubts; it’s that you don’t address those doubts.
Many assume that science and God can’t coexist, but what if that’s not true? What if science and Scripture were never meant to compete, but to work together? Throughout much of history, the belief was that they were complementary, and conflict was the result of either misunderstanding science or misinterpreting Scripture. Over time, though, people began to treat them as rivals, and anytime there is competition, there is a winner and a loser. But what if instead of “either or,” it’s actually “both and,” just like so many things in life that belong together? i.e. bacon and eggs.
As Christ followers, we already embrace “both and.” Jesus is both God and man, full of grace and truth, the beginning and the end. In the same way, science and faith can both point us toward truth. They are simply different tools. Science helps us understand the natural world, while Scripture reveals the supernatural. Like any tool, each has a purpose, and the problem comes when we expect one tool to do what it was never designed to do. Some of you are searching for clarity, but maybe what you really need is trust, because if your faith depends on having every answer, it will always be fragile.
Certainty in life is rare, even in science. Ideas shift and change over time, and what was once believed with confidence (the Earth is flat) is later adjusted or replaced with new evidence (the Earth is round). In the same way, faith isn’t about having every answer; it’s about trusting God even when you don’t. Like the scientific method, when questions arise, you don’t quit. You keep asking, testing, and seeking truth. As followers of Jesus, doubt isn’t the end; it’s an invitation to go deeper, to ask more questions, and to grow in understanding and faith.
When we look at the world around us, at creation…we see a structure, details that point beyond random possibility. We observe the intricate design of creation, the evidence of a Creator. History shows that Jesus lived and had followers and that he died by crucifixion. The eye witness accounts surrounding the resurrection of Jesus all point toward something greater. But ultimately, faith is not built on information alone; it’s built on trust and a relationship with Jesus. Your doubts don’t disqualify your faith; they can actually strengthen it. So, bring your questions to God, seek Him, and take steps of faith even when you don’t have it all figured out, because in the end, it’s not just about having answers, it’s about knowing Him and living out His love.
Scriptures— Revelation 22:13 (NIV); Hebrews 11:6 (NLT); Genesis 1:1-2 (NLT); Ecclesiastes 3:1-2 (NLT); Psalm 19:1-2 (NLT); 1 Corinthians 15:14 (NLT); John 13:35 (NIV)
Verses— And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him. (He 11:6) In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (Ge 1:1) The heavens proclaim the glory of God. The skies display his craftmanship…. (Ps 19:1-2) And if Christ has not been raised, then all our preaching is useless, and your faith is useless. (1 Co 15:14) “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (Jn 13:35)
Questions— Have you ever felt a need to defend God or Scripture when someone asked you a tough question? Why do you think so many people see science and faith as being in conflict? How does the idea of “both and” change that perspective? What is the difference between seeking clarity (having all the answers) and learning to trust God? What is your proof positive that salvation through Christ alone is real?
Prayer— Heavenly Father, thank You for allowing me to bring my questions and doubts to You. When I don’t have all the answers, strengthen my faith and help me to trust you. Help me to grow deeper in my relationship with You. May my life reflect Your truth and Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
