ANIMAL PLANET• When Pigs Fly– 7/27/25

As we continue our series “Animal Planet,” we will take a closer look at the story of Jesus healing a demon-possessed man, as found in Mark chapter 5. We will examine the themes of faith, transformation, and purpose. The highlighted animal today is Pigs.

By nature, pigs are clean animals. Their living areas have designated spots for sleeping, eating, and toileting. Pigs often get a bad rap as being dirty because they wallow in the mud to cool off due to not having sweat glands. Pigs are intelligent and communicative animals, who can perform tasks and vocalize over 20 different sounds. Pigs are also capable swimmers, which contradicts their portrayal in today’s story.

After Jesus calmed the storm, he and the disciples reach the other side of river. This highlights perseverance through life’s challenges to fulfill God’s purpose. Jesus knew that there was a man across the river that needed his help. As a result of being possessed by evil spirits, this man was considered dangerous, uncontrollable and tormented. The people of the area saw him as someone who was marginalized and broken, but despite their opinions, Jesus’ mission was to save the lost and set the captive free.

Jesus commands the evil spirits to leave the man and the spirits, as requested, enter a herd of pigs. “When pigs fly” is a saying which expresses that something is unlikely to happen. Instead of swimming to safety, the pigs drown, illustrating that nothing is impossible with God.
When the towns people return to the place where Jesus healed the man, he is found clothed, sane, and calm, showing a complete restoration through Jesus’s mercy. This reminds us that nothing is too difficult for Jesus and we can bring our struggles to Him as well.

Though the townspeople fear and reject Jesus after the incident, the healed man is commissioned to share his testimony and witness to others. As believers, we are reminded that we may be the only representation of Jesus others see, emphasizing the importance of sharing faith and living as examples in daily life.

Scriptures: Mark 5:1-21, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Acts 1:8, Romans 6:13

Verses: Give yourselves to God… Surrender your whole being to him to be used for righteous purposes. Romans 6:13 (TEV)

Questions: What situation or words in your past have made you feel broken or marginalized? When was a time when Jesus said “No.” to your request but it turned out for your good or the deliverance of someone else? Who is someone who needs to hear your story (testimony)?

Prayer: God, sometimes I feel like I don’t measure up to the expectations others have of me. And other times, my story doesn’t seem very impressive. On those days, help me to remember that you came to set me free of all my insecurities and that you can use even the smallest thing to impact the world in a big way. Help me to daily surrender my whole being to you to be used as a light in this dark world and a witness to those around me. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
